Home hearing test: who can have one, and what does it cost? (2026)

Last reviewed 5 October 2026 by Pete, editor (not a clinician). Prices checked 5 October 2026.

A home visit is a different product from a clinic test. We do not pass on home-visit requests yet. On 5 October 2026, Specsavers offered free home tests, in listed areas, to people unable to leave home unaccompanied. NHS aids are free; private pairs from £500. In July 2026, 41.5% waited six weeks or more for an NHS assessment.

Each row is the provider's own published wording, opened by Pete on 5 October 2026. Rows are grouped by type and listed alphabetically within each type. That is not a ranking. Prices are for a pair unless the row says otherwise. A provider may change a price at any time; its written quote is what counts. We delete a row we cannot re-open. Listing a provider here does not mean it is a partner of ours. Full list on Sources.

What can this site do, and what can it not do?

This is not medical advice. We are not a clinic, not the NHS, not an audiologist and not a hearing-aid shop. We do not test hearing, fit aids, diagnose, read an audiogram or hold an appointment. We cannot tell you whether a hearing aid would help you.

Do not use this form if you have sudden hearing loss in one ear, sudden dizziness with hearing loss, or bleeding from the ear. NICE guideline NG98 (last updated 2 October 2023) says hearing loss that came on over three days or less, within the last 30 days, should be seen by a specialist within 24 hours. Ask for a same-day GP appointment, call 111, or go to A&E.

What we can do: show the prices we opened and dated, explain the NHS and private routes, and, if you ask, pass your request to one independent audiology clinic that covers your area. That is free for you. The clinic may pay us.

How does asking a clinic to contact you work?

  1. Test or aids. A hearing test tells you where you stand. Hearing aids are a separate decision after it. The test is often free; the aids are where the cost is.
  2. One ear or both. Say which. A change in one ear only is worth raising with a GP first. How many aids, if any, is for you and the audiologist after the test.
  3. Clinic or home. Most people go to a clinic. A home visit is a different product. No partner clinic takes home-visit requests yet, so we only pass on clinic requests.
  4. Ask one clinic to contact you. Use the form. One partner clinic may call or email you. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and a price with them.

Can I ask for a home visit through this site?

Not yet. Home visits are a different product from a clinic appointment. No partner clinic has agreed to take home-visit requests yet, so the form offers a clinic appointment only. We will only add the home-visit choice to the form when a partner clinic has agreed to take home-visit requests.

Who offers home hearing tests?

On 5 October 2026, two of the providers we track published a home service:

  • Specsavers said it "is starting to roll out free home hearing tests" for people "unable to leave home unaccompanied due to a physical or mental illness or disability", in the areas it lists. Its English areas included Lincolnshire, Kent, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, South Yorkshire, Merseyside and parts of Cheshire, and Newcastle upon Tyne and Northumberland, among others.
  • Audika described a home hearing care service "for people who find it difficult to attend an appointment" at a clinic, including free hearing tests at home, aftercare and adjustments. It says the appointment takes around an hour, and you must be 19 or over.

We did not find a Boots Hearingcare home-visit page we could open on 5 October 2026.

Is there an NHS home hearing service?

In some areas. Specsavers' home hearing page, opened 5 October 2026, says: "In some areas, we offer an NHS-funded home hearing service. This includes an NHS-funded hearing test, new hearing aids, and aftercare for up to three years." It says you may need a GP referral, and in some areas you can book directly. It also says your GP may need to confirm you are registered as housebound. Ask the GP surgery what applies locally.

How is a home visit different from a clinic appointment?

  • Who can have one. Specsavers' home service is for people who cannot leave home unaccompanied. Audika's page is broader and includes people who "simply feel more comfortable being seen at home".
  • Where. Coverage is patchy and changes as services roll out.
  • When. Specsavers says it must notify the NHS at least 48 hours before a visit for up to two people at one address, and three weeks ahead for more than two.
  • What it costs. Specsavers' and Audika's home tests were free when we checked. Extras can cost more at home: Specsavers' terms list wax removal at £85 at a home visit against £55 in store (checked 5 October 2026). Aids are priced as in store: Specsavers said pairs from £500 (checked 5 October 2026).

Specsavers itself says "a home test may differ slightly from what you'd receive in-store".

What about someone in a care home?

Specsavers says care home tests are usually organised by the care home manager, often for several residents. NICE guideline NG98 (last updated 2 October 2023), recommendation 1.1.8, says GPs should consider referring adults with diagnosed or suspected dementia or mild cognitive impairment to audiology for a hearing assessment.

What if they can get to a clinic with help?

Then a clinic appointment may be simpler. Boots Hearingcare and Audika both suggest bringing a friend or family member to a hearing test. Ask the clinic about step-free access and parking before you go.

When is it not a home-visit question at all?

When hearing goes suddenly. Sudden hearing loss in one ear, sudden dizziness with hearing loss, or bleeding from the ear is not something to wait for a visit about: ask for a same-day GP appointment, call 111, or go to A&E.

Can I get a free home hearing test?

In some areas, if you are eligible. On 5 October 2026, Specsavers offered free home hearing tests in listed areas to people who cannot leave home unaccompanied, and Audika offered free hearing tests at home.

Do you arrange home hearing visits?

Not yet. A home visit is a different product from a clinic appointment. We will only add the home-visit choice to the form when a partner clinic has agreed to take home-visit requests.

Can I get NHS hearing aids at home?

In some areas. Specsavers says it offers an NHS-funded home hearing service in some areas, which may need a GP referral. Ask the GP surgery what applies locally.
