Hearing aid cost: NHS free versus private prices (2026)

Last reviewed 5 October 2026 by Pete, editor (not a clinician). Prices checked 5 October 2026.

NHS hearing aids are free after a referral, including batteries, repairs and aftercare. Private pairs we checked on 5 October 2026 start from £500 (Specsavers) and £695 (Boots); Boots' top tier starts at £4,195. In July 2026, 41.5% of people waiting for an NHS audiology assessment had waited six weeks or more.

Each row is the provider's own published wording, opened by Pete on 5 October 2026. Rows are grouped by type and listed alphabetically within each type. That is not a ranking. Prices are for a pair unless the row says otherwise. A provider may change a price at any time; its written quote is what counts. We delete a row we cannot re-open. Listing a provider here does not mean it is a partner of ours. Full list on Sources.

What can this site do, and what can it not do?

This is not medical advice. We are not a clinic, not the NHS, not an audiologist and not a hearing-aid shop. We do not test hearing, fit aids, diagnose, read an audiogram or hold an appointment. We cannot tell you whether a hearing aid would help you.

Do not use this form if you have sudden hearing loss in one ear, sudden dizziness with hearing loss, or bleeding from the ear. NICE guideline NG98 (last updated 2 October 2023) says hearing loss that came on over three days or less, within the last 30 days, should be seen by a specialist within 24 hours. Ask for a same-day GP appointment, call 111, or go to A&E.

What we can do: show the prices we opened and dated, explain the NHS and private routes, and, if you ask, pass your request to one independent audiology clinic that covers your area. That is free for you. The clinic may pay us.

How does asking a clinic to contact you work?

  1. Test or aids. A hearing test tells you where you stand. Hearing aids are a separate decision after it. The test is often free; the aids are where the cost is.
  2. One ear or both. Say which. A change in one ear only is worth raising with a GP first. How many aids, if any, is for you and the audiologist after the test.
  3. Clinic or home. Most people go to a clinic. A home visit is a different product. No partner clinic takes home-visit requests yet, so we only pass on clinic requests.
  4. Ask one clinic to contact you. Use the form. One partner clinic may call or email you. Nothing is booked until you agree a time and a price with them.

How much are private hearing aids per pair?

Each provider below is quoted on its own. We do not blend them into one average, because each price buys a different package.

  • Specsavers: from £500 a pair for its own Advance range, rechargeable from £1,000, and listed models up to £3,000 a pair (checked 5 October 2026). Specsavers says its prices are "always for a pair of hearing aids" and that other levels of branded technology are available.
  • Boots Hearingcare: Essentials from £695 a pair, Bronze from £2,095, Silver from £2,895, Gold from £3,395, Platinum from £3,695 and Platinum+ from £4,195 (checked 5 October 2026).
  • Audika (Hidden Hearing and Amplifon UK are now Audika): no price published. Its price page, opened 5 October 2026, says "we can't give you an exact price" before a test.
  • The Hearing Specialist (independent, south-west London): from £1,695 a pair, up to £4,400, with single aids from £798 (checked 5 October 2026).
  • All About Hearing (independent, Suffolk): "devices start from £999" (checked 5 October 2026). The page does not say whether that is per aid or per pair, so ask.

What does the price include?

Mostly aftercare, and it differs. On 5 October 2026: Specsavers listed a four-year warranty, a 100-day money-back guarantee and aftercare with a two-year follow-up. Boots Hearingcare listed up to four years' warranty, a 90-day money-back guarantee and lifetime aftercare. Audika listed a 24-month warranty, a 60-day money-back guarantee and servicing for the life of the aid. The Hearing Specialist listed a four-year warranty and four years of unlimited aftercare. Compare the package, not just the headline price. More on aftercare.

Why is the test free when the aids cost so much?

Because the clinic's money is usually in the aids, not the test. A free test is a way in. That is how most of the private market works, and it is fine as long as you know it. You can take your results away, think, and compare quotes. Specsavers and Boots Hearingcare both say there is no obligation to buy.

What costs extra after you buy?

  • Losing an aid. Specsavers says its stores will "talk you through the cost" of a replacement. On the NHS, there may be a charge if you lose or break an aid (NHS website, opened 5 October 2026).
  • Repairs outside the warranty. Audika says repair charges apply once an aid is out of warranty and not covered by its Oneplan scheme, which costs from £75 a year (checked 5 October 2026).
  • Batteries after any included period, unless the aids are rechargeable.
  • Wax removal. This is a different appointment, often with its own fee.

Are NHS hearing aids really free?

Yes, after a referral. The NHS website (page last reviewed 18 October 2023, opened 5 October 2026) says NHS hearing aids are provided free on long-term loan, batteries and repairs are free, and you do not pay for follow-up appointments or aftercare. It also says NHS aids are usually the behind-the-ear type, or very occasionally receiver-in-the-ear, and you may need to pay privately for other types. The same page says private aids can cost "anything from £500 to £3,500 or more for a single hearing aid".

Is one hearing aid cheaper than two?

Usually, where a provider sells single aids. On 5 October 2026, The Hearing Specialist listed single aids from £798 against pairs from £1,695. Specsavers prices pairs only. Whether you need one, two or none is not something we can say. NICE guideline NG98 (last updated 2 October 2023) says, in recommendation 1.6.2: "Offer 2 hearing aids to adults with aidable hearing loss in both ears." An audiologist applies that after your test. More on one hearing aid or two.

How much do private hearing aids cost in England?

On 5 October 2026, Specsavers listed pairs from £500 and Boots Hearingcare from £695 a pair. Top tiers cost several thousand pounds: Boots' Platinum+ starts at £4,195.

Are NHS hearing aids free?

Yes, after a referral. The NHS website says they are free on long-term loan, with free batteries, repairs and aftercare. There may be a charge to replace a lost or broken aid.

Why don't you give an average price?

Because each provider includes a different warranty, trial period and aftercare. An average would hide those differences, so we quote each provider's own published price with the date we checked it.
